About Save a Mexican Mutt

SAMM was founded in 2003 by Kelly Karger after she and her husband, Jim, moved to Mexico and witnessed the suffering of homeless and neglected dogs.

They discovered in most areas of Mexico dogs and cats are gathered up by Departments of Ecologia and euthanized by electrocution, drowning, or shooting. As well as rescuing and transporting dogs to new homes they also help with spay/neuter campaigns and awareness, vaccinations and giving pets proper care and treatment.

History

2001

Kelly and Jim Karger move to San Miguel de Allende.

Suerte, their first rescue dog. Suerte is now 10 years old and living a spoiled life with the Karger clan.

Karger's begin to move out of 'vacation' mode and into awareness mode — awareness of the suffering of so many homeless dogs.

Rescue a litter of 9 puppies 2 weeks old. Homes are found for all with friends, family and clients.

Mary and Steve Dolch of Albuquerque, NM, came onboard to help save even more dogs. They have been an invaluable asset to the mission of SAMM by helping to transport, performing home visits, and networking which has resulted in more adoptions and foster families for rescued Mexican street dogs.

Rescues and trips taken

On January 13, 2011, we will make our first dog transport of the year from San Miguel de Allende, Gto., Mexico to San Antonio, Texas.  Five lucky dogs will be on board.  Two of those will be flown to Vancouver to Mex-Can Partners Rescue Group.  One will fly to Albuquerque to begin a six month quarantine so he can then fly to the U.K. to his new home.  One will fly to his new home in Phoenix, AZ.  And, another will be driven to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area where her new family is patiently waiting for her arrival.

March 15 - 21 Seven dogs went north: 1 flew to Oakland, CA, 1 flew to Albany, NY, 1 flew to Kensignton, CT, 4 were adopted in Texas.  One of those was not an ideal match and made the trip back to Mexico with us.  And, Sampson was rescued by Sucker for Strays in San Antonio, TX and adopted by a family in San Miguel de Allende.  He, too, made the trip back to Mexcio.

June 1, Volunteer transporter and all around dog lover, Marilyn Sibley transports two dogs to Dallas, Texas by car.

June 6,  Four more dogs head to homes in Victoria, BC, Canada after being driven to San Antonio, Texas.  Then, they fly via Continental Airlines PetSafe Program where they are met by Marlene Davis of Mex-Can Partners.

July 27, SAMM holds it's first spay/neuter clinic in Colonia San Luis Rey.  20 animals are sterilized.  Now, we are getting to the root of the problem.  Community members receive education during their time at the clinic with their animals.

August 4 - 25 animals, 18 - 26 animals sterilized at SAMM clinics.
